Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Most provinces in Canada have an agreement with the Government of Canada that allows them to play a more direct role in selecting immigrants who wish to settle in that province. If you wish to immigrate to one of Canada’s provinces as a provincial nominee, you must first apply to the province where you wish to settle. The province will consider your application based on their immigration needs and your genuine intention to settle there.

Most provinces have a skilled worker program and a business program depending on your needs. Before applying to immigrate to Canada, provincial nominees must complete the provincial nomination process. The benefits of applying to a provincial nominee program are twofold.

The first benefit is that the process is considerably faster than the Federal program and the second benefit is that provincial nominees are not assessed on the six selection factors of the Federal Skilled Workers Program. Not all provinces have a PNP process. Currently, the following provinces participate; British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, Alberta (only skilled workers), Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia.

Many provinces have “Provincial Nominee” programs to attract skilled technology workers by allowing them to “fast track” for Permanent Resident status in 6 months or less. In the past 2 years, B.C. has used its Provincial Nominee Program to recruit Information Technology workers and others.
